Features

ATLAS.ti is a powerful workbench for the qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical, audio and video data.

It offers a variety of tools for accomplishing the tasks associated with any systematic approach to "soft" data--i.e., material which cannot be analyzed by formal, statistical approaches in meaningful ways.

In the course of such a qualitative analysis, ATLAS.ti helps you to uncover the complex phenomena hidden in your data in an exploratory way. For coping with the inherent complexity of the tasks and the data, ATLAS.ti offers a powerful and intuitive work environment that is designed to keep you focused on the material itself.

Atlast.ti's four predominant strategic modes of operation are encapsulated in the acronym "VISE":

  ‧Coding Images
An attractive feature of ATLAS.ti for Windows is the capability to use graphic, audio and video files as primary documents. This feature is already a valuable instrument not only for those traditionally engaged in text-based qualitative data analysis, but will also improve other fields of research.

Handling of graphics is almost identical to working with primary texts. Dragging the mouse while pressing the left mouse button creates a region, which is registered as a "quotation". This quotation appears in the same list that displays the normal text segments. It can be commented, coded, imported into a network, hyperlinked to other graphic or textual selections. An interpretation (e.g., a comment attched to a selection) can be displayed by double-clicking on a graphic selection.

Besides using this new feature for creating balloons, other, more serious applications may be thought of in domains which are not necessarily devoted to qualitative data analysis:

  ‧Coding Images II

The text on yellow background is a comment for the selected area. It pops up when double-clicking inside this selection.

◎Intuitive: easy on-screen coding (drag & drop)
  ‧The Hermeneutic Unit Editor
The main editor for hermeneutic units with a floating code managerwindow. The basic project components (primary documents, quotations, codes, memos) are presented as drop-down lists by default. Floating windows displaying these lists may be activated at any time. Coding can be done by simply dragging codes from the code manager onto the selected piece of text (or graphic selection). In-Vivo coding is just as easy: drag the selected text itself into the code manager

Back to paper & pencil but with added value: Note the area right to the primary text pane, the margin area . In addition to differently colored brackets, the codes, hyperlinks and memos attached to the text scroll synchronized with the primary text area. Clicking on an object in the margin area executes certain actions (like playing a video sequence corresponding to a transcribed piece of text) or displays an object specific context menu.

Both the margin area and the dynamic paragraph number area , can be switched on and off.

  ‧The Network Editor
The Network Editor allows editing and creating conceptual networks from material gathered during the "textual phase" of working.

Codes, memos, etc. can be imported into the network editor by dragging elements from their respective lists. Fonts and colors may be chosen freely.

Note, that ATLAS.ti's networks are not just pretty images, but define a conceptual model, which can also be used to query the data intelligently.

Nodes and links are "hot" and respond with defined actions (like displaying a comment, etc.) to a mouse-click. All objects in the editor, including links, do have their specialized object or context menus (below: a link's menu). Floating on the network editor's main screen is the tool for the alignment of codes. This allows easy manual placement of nodes in addition to the strong layout methods provided by ATLAS.ti.

NOTE: Any good tool must be also capable of being misused. Below, find an example for a creative misuse of network view.

By dragging or otherwise importing graphical primary documents into a network view you can produce quite impressive graphical contents lists.

By opening the context menu for any of the documents you can rapidly load it into the main display area.

Single User License: Installation of the program purchased under a single user license is restricted to one single personal computer owned by or under control of the licensee plus one additional computer also owned by the licensee. However, at any given time only one copy of ATLAS.ti may be in use.
